Room 421, Saturday

Lindsay couldn't deny that she had been envious these past few days. Watching people with their loved ones who had previously been deceased was a little hard. It made her wonder why her grandmother hadn't visited her.

"I really miss you," she said to a photograph of her grandmother holding her when she was a baby. "Why aren't you here?"

Maybe she really was disappointed for not living up to certain expectations. Lindsay tried to push that thought out of her mind. To cheer herself up, she started listening to her favorite Grateful Dead album on her new mp3 player. Usually she ended up dancing around, one of the few moments she allowed herself to be happy.

She didn't feel like dancing right now, though.

"Good weird and bad weird get all mixed up," she said, shaking her head. She flopped down on her floor, perfectly willing to share the carton if her roomie was. "My mom came back, so it's both. Did you ... was anyone ... ?"

Two immediate guesses: either someone had come for her, or ... someone hadn't.

Lindsay sat on the floor beside Rinoa, sharing the carton. "That's nice. That you got to see your mom."

She meant in sincerely. After a few more seconds, she frowned. "No one came to visit me. My grandma was the only person who could have, but..."

She dug her spoon right into the ice cream.

"It was," Rinoa said fondly. She was trying to focus on that side of it. She'd spent two days with her mother. It was a gift. She missed her, again, but she always had.

She winced mid-bite. "But ... she was a no-show?" she asked. "That would be rough. Everyone else gets someone, and you wait, but ..."

She was especially going to be grateful, now that she realized how heartbroken she might have been if her mother hadn't come at all.

"I was with her. When she died," Lindsay revealed. "So I actually got to say goodbye. Maybe that's why she didn't visit."

That was better than thinking her grandmother was too disappointed to visit. It was definitely more comforting.

"Maybe it is," Rinoa said, nodding her agreement. "My mom, she was in a car accident. And Squall's mom died right after he was born, so he never met her, not really, until now. Maybe it was just people who had ... unfinished business. Like they say with ghosts."

Lindsay winced. "I'm really sorry about your mom."

Though she though her parents were lame at times, she didn't know what she would do without them.
